Types of Therapy

Therapy has become a method of counseling that has been proven, many times, to bring forth positive results. For that reason, there are many types of therapy counseling that have developed. One type of therapy that many have found success with is called psychoanalytic counseling. It was developed by Sigmund Freud. In psychoanalytic counseling, the focus is to have the patient take the floor, and talk about their lives, as the therapist listens on. Therapists do more than nod their heads in reassurance when they undergo this type of therapy counseling. A therapist takes this opportunity to listen to the details of the patient’s story in order to determine if there are any drastic events that occurred that led to his or her current behavior and/or disorder. Through psychoanalytic therapy, counseling is performed in order to find out what unconscious feelings may be harvested in relation to events that have gone in the life of the individual. In psychoanalytic therapy, it is believed that there is a connection between those harsh feelings and the current behaviors or disorder.

There is another type of therapy counseling that is called group therapy. Group therapy is a type of counseling where groups of people work with a number of different counseling therapists. This is a helpful form of counseling that is commonly utilized because it is a way in which people are able to learn from each other. No matter what has happened in a person’s life or who they are, it has been proven that there is always something to be learned from one another. It is just a matter of opening your eyes, and your hearts, to be able to receive that knowledge. Group counseling has become a way to not only produce a rather fruitful learning environment, but it has been able to offer one of the best support systems there is- the support of those that can relate to your circumstances.

There is also a type of therapy counseling that is called cognitive-behavioral counseling. With this type of focus, the therapist will thoroughly examine the thoughts of a patient in order to determine why their behavior is such. Cognitive-behavioral counseling takes a more specific approach. The goal is to tackle a specific issue which is believed to be the core root of the disorder.
